How to Find Makeup Looks That Suit You

31/07/2025

This was supposed to be a Q&A

Problem is, I don't have much of a following (yet) and therefore received a whopping one question. Lucky for me, it was a corker. This is for you, Meera.

There are no rules when it comes to makeup, only recommendations. Experts suggest using products designed to counter your imperfections and enhance natural features, but in reality, all makeup can be used by anyone. Makeup is all about expressing yourself and making your face pop. There are many ways to achieve your ultimate face-card without spending a ton.

1. Know Your Skin

When it comes to makeup, skin type and tone are worth considering when shopping.

A quick rundown of skin types:

  • Normal skin is smooth and soft
  • Oily skin is shiny, and pores are often enlarged
  • Dry skin is rough to touch, sometimes peels, and its pores are barely visible
  • Combination skin can be a mix of these or all of the above in different areas

I always recommend reading the back of products, as the packaging usually states who the product is intended for. As a general 'rule':

  • Powder foundations are ideal for oily skin as they help absorb oil
  • Liquid foundations are good for dry skin, especially those with hydrating formulas
  • Water-based foundations are a good go-to for combination skin

When it comes to blush, skin tone can play a part in what looks best.

  • Paler complexions often suit lighter pinks and peaches
  • Medium to tan skin tones look great with darker peach shades
  • Darker skin tones often rock dark pink and reddish shades

2. All About Eyes

The beauty of eyeshadow and eyeliner is they can be used to complement any eye shape! Here's how:

Eye shapes: tips and tricks to make your eyes pop

  • Hooded – place shadow above the crease and apply shadow on bottom lashes. Eyeliner in upper lash line. Sparkly eye is very complimentary.
  • Monolids – spotlight eye: focus on depth in inner and outer corners – leave the centre free for shimmer.
  • Almond – pull off basically anything – winged liner slays.
  • Round – enhance outer corner, wedged smoky liner.
  • Upturned – focus depth on outer corners.
  • Downturned – concentrate makeup on lid, wing liner.
  • Wide-set – line lash line with eye pencil.
  • Close-set – focus eyeshadow on outer corners.

3. Style

Keeping your individual style in mind is important when it comes to makeup. If you wear a lot of black, adding some colourful eyeshadow or a bold lip can make a real statement. If you love colour, keeping your makeup neutral can help your outfit pop. Adding colour to your outfit and makeup at the same time is a power move—and it's one of my personal favourite looks.

There are no rules in makeup. I often don't follow what the experts recommend: I don't know my eye shape, I've guessed my skin type, and I've never been told my makeup looks crazy (and if it does, I'm happy being in denial). These tips—though I am no expert—could help with finding makeup looks that work for you.

What are your tips? Feel free to share them in the comment box 😊

Love,
Em xx
